Passkeys are spreading to a growing number of sites and services. Expected to one day replace passwords, which are not an ideal solution for properly securing accounts, they are listed on a dedicated site to know where to use them.
It is said that the days of passwords are numbered, due to the arrival of passkeys, or access keys in French. Amazon’s announcement on October 23 reinforces this impression: even the e-commerce giant has taken the plunge, switching to passwords — a new, simpler and more secure method of logging into an account, without a password. pass.
Amazon is not the first to take this step, but its involvement reflects a groundswell that is spreading across the internet, and which makes it plausible that passwords will one day disappear. This movement, started in 2022 with a coalition bringing together Apple, Google and Microsoft, is gradually bringing everyone along.
Before Amazon, other leading platforms had launched — such as PayPal and TikTok. In fact, there are already several dozen who are already in the “next world”, even if connection with the username/password pair remains offered (and widely used). To track the switch, there is now a dedicated site, called Passkeys.directory.
Which sites have already activated the passkeys?
This platform is operated by 1Password, one of the leading password managers on the market. Like its competitors, 1Password is observing the arrival of passkeys with the greatest attention, because this directly affects its activities: the storage of passwords for Internet users. Moreover, 1Password has started with passwords.
This is a movement that we are seeing among other managers, from Dashlane to NordPass, LastPass or BitWarden. And we can guess that Proton, which has also entered the management arena, will sooner or later end up taking a closer interest. In any case, Proton does not close the door to passkeys at all. It’s not his priority at the moment.
Because there are more and more sites taking the plunge, Passkeys.directory aims to centralize everything. To list them completely here would be a bit vain, but we can nevertheless point out several names which clearly illustrate the extent of the movement which is taking place. Thus, in addition to the companies already mentioned, such as PayPal, Google, Microsoft and TikTok, let us cite: Adobe, Binance, Boursorama, eBay, GitHub, Nintendo, Nvidia, OnlyFans, PayFit, Shopify, Synology, Uber and Yahoo.
In total, the directory contains 80 entries, with additional information, including the category of the site and especially the link leading to the source of the information. Notes may also be included to provide clarification.
Today, these 80 sites manage account login with passkeys. On the other hand, support for passkeys as part of a so-called multi-factor authentication (MFA) process, that is to say two-factor authentication, is more scattered. The site only lists 14 sites. There is also a section to vote for sites that should get started.
The work carried out by Passkeys.directory is reminiscent of initiatives of the same order, which we saw in the past with double authentication, at the time when it was still relatively uncommon on the internet. Sites intended to list all the services that had taken the plunge. Today, these spaces are less necessary, as many have switched, especially the largest sites.
