Developers can now use WebView2 within their UWP apps.

Intended to make applications universal between the various products developed by Microsoft such as Windows, Xbox consoles and other devices from the Redmond company, the UWP platform does not have a special place in the hearts of developers. But although Win32 and the Progressive Web Apps (PWA) are enjoying greater popularity on Windows, industry players including Microsoft continue to develop UWP applications.

Applications that make the most of web technologies

WebView2 enables the integration of web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript into UWP applications. Based on the new versions of Edge Chromium and no longer on Edge Legacy like its predecessor, it is more compatible with the current web environment. It considerably reduces the burden on developers who are now accustomed to using this environment in their Progressive Web Appsincreasingly common in desktop.

We will therefore see the emergence of UWP applications that make the most of what the Chromium platform has to offer, but also capable of taking up less disk space. Indeed, WebView2 and Microsoft Edge Chromium are included and bundled in Windows 11, which eliminates the need to distribute the WebView2 Runtime with applications, as is always the case on Windows 10.

There is no guarantee that this announcement will give the UWP platform a boost. It is nevertheless a great victory for the latter, which is catching up on its alternatives.
