Windows users who surf the Web with Google Chrome will soon be able to set the Web browser by default with just one click!

Many Windows users do not use Microsoft Edge, the replacement for Internet Explorer. Most of them choose Chrome as their browser of choice. However, Microsoft had made the procedure for changing the default browser in Windows 11 particularly tedious, a particularly criticized way of doing things on which the company seemed to have returned.

The new option already in the boxes?

It was on Reddit that a user, Leoparda64-2, posted screenshots of code shared on Gerrit, the web-based code review application for teamwork. The annotations in this code reveal Google’s desire to set Chrome as the default with a single click on Windows.

The note is quite clear, the new functionality will have to “ use URL protocol and browsing-related file associations to directly modify necessary registry entries “. This manipulation, achievable in a single click from the browser and acting directly in the Windows registers, however raises security issues. Indeed, the manipulation of the registers remains delicate, but Google will certainly find a way to implement this new functionality in complete safety.

This option was deployed by Mozilla Firefox a year ago and should therefore soon see the light of day on Chromium browsers. However, no date has been given. Moreover, the functionality is not yet accessible in the version dedicated to developers to date.
