A look at YouTube

Google wants to further improve navigation on YouTube with a functionality that would allow access to the best moments of videos with a button. For the moment, access remains restricted.

Keen to further enrich the user experience of its fans, YouTube is currently testing a new, very practical navigation feature with some of its American paying subscribers. Google’s video service has just made it possible to go directly to the best moments of a video, using a simple button.

YouTube offers “skip forward” to directly access the best moments of a video

We know that it is already possible, on a PC using its keyboard, or on a smartphone with your finger, to modify a whole bunch of parameters while watching a video. It can be speed or a jump of 5, 10 or 20 seconds depending on the number of times you tap on your screen in the case of a mobile.

YouTube says it uses artificial intelligence to offer its subscribers access to the most viewed parts of the videos they watch on the platform. How does the new feature work?

Concretely, instead of jumping forward 10 seconds when they double-tap on the screen, a small bubble appears at the bottom right of the screen, encouraging users to “Jump ahead”. that is to say, to make a sort of “leap forward”.

Artificial intelligence, at the heart of YouTube developments

This is a small pop-up bubble, which only appears for a few seconds and disappears if you ignore it. But if you press the button, YouTube will redirect you to the most viewed part of the video.

To do this, the American giant says it uses AI and user viewing data, which help identify the best part of a video in the sense of these users. The functionality should be extended to content creators, who will be able to use it even if they do not have a premium account, being limited to their own videos. Remember that for the latter, it is already possible to identify the most viewed parts of a video, from YouTube Studio, the famous video administration panel. Users can also see viewing peaks on certain videos, without a button to access them directly, at least until now.

Other features powered by artificial intelligence are also being tested at YouTube, such as summaries of what is said in the comments section for example. Let it be said, the platform has not finished evolving.

Journalist, responsible for Clubic news. Reporter, videographer, host and even singer-imitator, I wrote my first article in 6th grade. I made this vocation my profession (graduated from EJCAM, a school recognized by the profession), to write, interview, film, edit and produce written, audio or video content on a daily basis. Some chemistry with Tech, certainly, but also with the world of media, sport and travel. In addition to journalism, video production and animation, I have a YouTube channel (in my name) which should pique your curiosity if you like beautiful walks around the world, new technologies and music 🙂
