Ukrainians shelter from rocket attacks

Ukrainian air defenses intercept dozens of Russian cruise missiles and drones. But some projectiles hit their target. Another attack kills one person. Energy infrastructure is once again in the sights of Putin’s troops. Kiev Mayor Klitschko urges caution.

According to Ukrainian sources, Russian forces have fired dozens of rockets at various targets in Ukraine in a new series of attacks. A 55-year-old man was killed in the capital Kyiv and two others were injured, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Klitschko also reported an explosion in the Ukrainian capital and called on citizens to stay in shelters.

An impact crater was shown in pictures, presumably in an eastern part of the city of three million. “The enemy fired more than 15 cruise missiles in the direction of Kyiv,” said the head of the Kiev military administration, Serhiy Popko. However, the air defense was able to shoot down “everyone”. According to Valery Zalushny, the supreme commander of the Ukrainian armed forces, the Ukrainian army destroyed 47 out of 55 Russian cruise missiles, “20 of them in the capital region”.

According to the local military administration, two important power plants were damaged in the rocket attacks in the southern Odessa region. There were no injuries, but the residents should remain in the shelters. To relieve the power grid after the Russian attacks, electricity was shut off in several Ukrainian regions. According to the largest private electricity producer in the country, DTEK, the city and region of Kyiv and the regions of Odessa and Dnipropetrovsk were affected.

The Ukrainian Air Force had previously announced that it had shot down 24 Iranian-made drones. Russian troops launched it from the Sea of Azov in the south of the country. “According to preliminary information, the enemy deployed 24 Shahed drones. All 24 were destroyed,” the Air Force said in a statement.

Since October, Russia has regularly launched missile attacks on Ukraine, mostly targeting energy infrastructure. The latest attack came a day after Western allies pledged to support Kyiv with heavy tanks.
