One in three households subscribe to Netflix in France

The Choose France summit launched by Emmanuel Macron returns this week. This is an event created to motivate foreign groups to invest in France. In this context, Netflix co-boss Ted Sarandos gave an interview to the media JDD to come back to the particular situation of SVOD in France.

4.5% of Netflix subscriptions are in France

In this interview, we learn in particular that Netflix now has in France more than 10 million households subscribe to its service. A very impressive figure, because according to INSEE, we had nearly 30 million households in France in 2016. In other words, almost one in three households would have access to Netflix in France.

With 222 million subscribers worldwide, France represents 4.5% of SVOD service subscriptions. It must be said that the direct subscription to Netflix is ​​no longer the only way to access it. The service is included in offers like that of Canal, or with several Internet operators like Free.

Netflix is ​​also seeing strong growth in France, since in 2020, the SVOD service had 6.7 million subscriber households. The firm would therefore have succeeded in bringing together 3 million additional subscriptions despite fierce competition from Disney +, but also from Amazon Prime.

Remember that all is not rosy for Netflix. The service has lost subscribers for the first time and is ready to shake up its offer. We are talking here about the integration of advertisements or the questioning of the binge-watching. In the interview, Ted Sarandos also returns to the choice soon offered to offer subscribers to pay less against the display of advertisements. One way to lower the price of the subscription while Netflix is ​​the most expensive in the sector.

It also addresses the issue of password sharing which is set to become a chargeable option. Nearly 100 million people watch Netflix without paying thanks to account sharing, according to the co-boss.

200 million euros invested

Obviously, Netflix cannot intervene in France without promoting its local investments. In the interview, Ted Sarandos indicates that Netflix has invested “ 200 million euros in French creation, including 40 million in independent films “. The goal is to recreate hits like the Lupin series.

Remember that these are constraints put in place by France to involve foreign groups in French cultural production.
