Although there is often free Wi-Fi for customers and visitors in many holiday areas, hotels, restaurants, public places and more, this is not so easy with mobile internet on a trip outside of the EU.

While you can often use your mobile phone tariff, including mobile data, in large parts of Europe, especially the EU, thanks to EU roaming, this is not the case in the USA, large parts of Turkey or Switzerland. If you are not careful, very high costs can arise.

Freenet wants to put an end to this with its new service freenet Travel. The mobile operator describes freenet Travel as practical, simple, secure, flexible, convenient and affordable. However, the actual contract is concluded with 1GLOBAL, a leading global eSIM provider.

How freenet Travel works

The only requirement for freenet Travel is an eSIM-enabled device with a camera, which almost all modern smartphones have. You then scan the QR code and click on the link.

If you see an error instead of the link, your device is probably not eSIM compatible.

You can use the SIM manager to set up an eSIM as a secondary card at best. If the setup was successful, you will receive a link to the booking page. There you can then select the relevant country and data package. Once the booking is complete, you can start straight away.

freenet shows you in a video how the setup works for iOS and Android.

eSIM: All information about the virtual SIM card
Providers, facilities, etc.

In the future, the SIM card will be placed in our devices less and less as a plastic card, but rather virtually in the form of an eSIM. We clarify all important questions about the eSIM, from the provider to the setup.

We also recommend that you Book your package before you travelbecause internet is required for booking. You should also deactivate roaming for your primary SIM to avoid accidentally using the wrong SIM for mobile data, which can lead to high costs. freenet explains this very well in the video above.

freenet Travel is cheaper than many alternatives

When booking freenet Travel, you can choose between many countries and several data packages. The prices vary depending on your selection. One gigabyte for a week in Switzerland costs around 3.99 euros. The same package for Turkey or the USA would cost 5.99 euros.

freenet Travel offers attractive data packages in Turkey.

If you only want to share a few messages and a few pictures via WhatsApp or social media, one gigabyte is enough. The price per gigabyte decreases as the volume of data booked increases.

The prices are very reasonable compared to typical roaming packages. Vodafone’s so-called EasyTravel week costs 21.99 euros. However, this gives you access to your entire tariff, not just a few gigabytes of data. With Telekom’s Travel and Surf, two gigabytes over seven days in Turkey cost 15.95 euros.

If you only need data volume, which can also be used for making phone calls and writing messages thanks to services like WhatsApp, freenet Travel is a cheap alternative. If you have an eSIM-enabled smartphone, your next vacation can finally begin.
