One of the Bitcoin Core developers Luke Dashjr has just announced the theft of his precious cryptocurrency.

His PGP key (for Pretty Good Privacy) would have been compromised. An astonishing flight, the details of which are not yet known.

216.9 bitcoins gone

Luke Dashjr will not have had a good New Year. He is indeed celebrating the transition to 2023 with the theft of his personal bitcoins, 216.9 in total, representing at the time this article was written 3.5 million dollars.

And this theft does not affect just anyone, since the victim is one of the most important developers of Bitcoin Core, the main peer-to-peer client of cryptocurrency, used by nearly 90% of miners. Suffice to say that we are once again skeptical about the level of security in the world of cryptos.

Luke Dashjr, who communicated on Twitter to announce the theft, provides little information. ” I have no idea how [cela s’est passé] » he thus explained.

FBI called for help, Binance in support

An event that surprised many Internet users. How could someone involved in Bitcoin since 2011 get hacked? Security in this sector requires you to deposit your assets, when they reach a certain level, in a cold wallet (cold wallet). This type of device allows, unlike hot wallets (hot wallet), to store its cryptos outside the network, like Ledger keys. And therefore to protect themselves from an attack.

To a tweeter asking him why he would have deposited more than 200 cryptos in a hot walletLuke Dashjr replies that pirates “ have also somehow had [son] cold wallet “. Again, this is the only information given.

In any case, the developer sought to quickly contact the FBI to find answers. And he obtained support from Binance boss Changpeng Zhao, who assured him that if these bitcoins were to transit on his platform, they would be immediately frozen.
