One Piece Odyssey: an informative developer diary released with an overview of the combat system

In this period of absence of a new chapter of One Piece, so all the news regarding the license is good news for the fans. This time it’s the next original game we’re looking at, One Piece Odyssey, which is now entitled to a developer diary in which producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki, composer Motoi Sakuraba and the chief manga editor for the Jump Ken Takano discuss this new adventure.

After returning to the concept of the game which should make us “travel to the depths of memories”the producer tells us that the development of the game started 5 years ago while the manga was still only at Whole Cake Islandwhich probably explains the lack of Jinbe. It was only in 2019 that Oda created the two new characters that are Audio and Limwhose names we have known since trailer on the crew that aired earlier this month, and various creatures we’ll be battling like the Leviathan and dry penguin. We can in passing admire the drawings of the master and the work of the artists of the game with the facial expressions of Luffy.

The island the crew landed on is otherwise named Waforddivided into areas to explore with all the members of the band, all with a level. Special displacements using the elasticity of Luffycut obstacles with the swords of Zorosqueeze through tight spaces in the skin of chopper or create a bridge using Frankie will be so many actions highlighting the specificities of each. This environment has many surprises in store for us, with ruins, underground areas, dungeons and more. The fights will be turn-based with the choice of the attack to be carried out and a concept of divided zones will randomly distribute our characters and the enemies they face each on their side, with a certain importance given to positioning. Another system called “Staged” will produce random events in combat requiring the character to outdo themselves and coordinated attacks will also be present. Finally, Motoi Sakuraba talks about the work he did on the soundtrack.

Still no release date on the horizon, but One Piece Odyssey will be released in 2022 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
