One Piece on Netflix: who is this back character in the end scene?


What should we remember from the hidden post-credits scene at the end of the first season of the Netflix series “One Piece”, adapted from the famous manga?

To the question, is there a post-credits scene at the end of the One Piece series, the answer is: yes.

Yes, since now the films and series which do not offer them are more rare than those which provide them, since the habit taken by Marvel productions to include bonus scenes in the credits of its films. But what does the post-credits scene of One Piece contain?

To tell the truth, not much, at least at first glance, since this short sequence films a man seen from behind, two cigars in hand (!) and a wanted poster for Luffy in front of him. In a cloud of smoke, the latter crushes his cigarette butt on the poster, thus burning the face of the leader of the Straw Hat crew.

For neophyte viewers, having never read the One Piece manga (105 volumes available from Glénat) or seen the animated adaptation, this additional scene will inspire little.

While hardcore fans of the original work have certainly jumped off their couch when they discovered this teaser of an iconic character!

Questioned by our colleagues from varietythe showrunner of the series Steven Maeda has nevertheless decided to maintain the mystery as to the identity of the character: “I don’t want to confirm or deny anything at this point. It’s a cool mystery I think, and it should keep people guessing or trying to figure out what’s going on.”

This post-credits scene, however, confirms that the second season, provided it is officially ordered by Netflix of course, will introduce Captain Smoker, a Navy officer. Particularly massive, the latter has remained in the memories of fans both for its excessive power and for its habit of smoking two cigars at the same time!

In the manga chronology, Smoker is indeed in the list of the next opponents whose Straw Hat crew will cross the road. Filmed in this way from behind, Smoker does not reveal his interpreter who will only be chosen on the condition that a season 2 sees the light of day.

The series is currently in first position in the ranking of the most viewed programs on Netflix in 84 countries, including France, but its renewal for an additional season could now depend on the outcome of the writers’ strike…
