One Piece Red: plenty of box office entries for the animated phenomenon!

Starts cannonball for One Piece Movie – Red. The animated phenomenon in theaters is growing steadily in France. Far from the 4,053 admissions recorded for One Piece Gold, the previous film in the One Piece franchise to be released in theaters in November 2016. One Piece Red starts at 260,000 admissions! It must of course be taken into account that Wednesday’s release was preceded by numerous previews last weekend. If we only keep the figures for this Wednesday, August 10, we still reach 141,000 admissions in 631 cinemas.

For comparison, here are the scores recorded for the last 3 big anime released in theaters for a year or more for their first day of operation in France: My Hero Academia World Heroes Mission recorded 43,011 admissions, in January 2022; Demon Slayer the Infinity Train sold 58,500 tickets in May 2021; finally, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, 113,443 spectators in March 2022.

The One Piece phenomenon took off this year in particular due to big announcements this year, between the release of Volume 100, not to mention the thousandth episode of the series… The manga author has also communicated a lot about the near end of the story (which he would like to finish in 2025).

The One Piece raid leaves little room for the other novelties of the week. Favorite of the press this week, the film Boop by Jordan Peele achieves just over 36,000 admissions elbow-to-elbow with the French comedy The Very Very High Class which is ahead of him by barely 200 entries! Excluding comedy previews, Nope is second in single-day Wednesday numbers. For comparison, Get Out recorded 51,190 admissions for its first day in France in 2017, and Us, 45,458 tickets sold in 2019.
