Open words from Sophia Bush: The “One Tree Hill” actress has spoken publicly about her coming out for the first time.

Just a year after her picture-perfect wedding, “One Tree Hill” star Sophia Bush (41) made headlines last year with her separation from her husband Grant Hughes. A few months later, her new relationship became public – with a woman. Now the actress publicly describes herself as “queer” for the first time and is open about how her life has changed in the past few months.

“I finally feel like I can breathe,” she writes in an essay for the April issue of US “Glamour”. “I don’t think I can explain how profound this is.” She feels like she’s been wearing a weighted vest and finally taken it off.

In her essay, Bush goes on to describe how she experienced an uneasy feeling before and during her marriage to Hughes. Pathetic attempts to get pregnant ultimately put further strain on the relationship. The actress took a job in London to gain some distance, fell ill with a virus and had to be treated in hospital. “It was clear that my body was screaming and I had to listen. It was difficult for me to understand,” Bush writes. “My time in London was over. And so was my marriage.” The 41-year-old does not make public exactly why her marriage broke up in the end.

Sophia Bush clarifies: “I am not an adulteress”

After the separation, she received support from various women in her life. This also applies to former US national soccer player Ashlyn Harris (38), who is now her partner. Sophia Bush clarifies that she was going through a divorce herself at the time, denying rumors that she was the reason for the end of Harris’ marriage to her ex-wife.

“I didn’t expect that I would find love in this network of supporters. (…) I didn’t see it until I saw it,” describes the actress. “What I saw was a friend with her big, happy life. And now I know she thought the same about me.”

Sophia Bush describes herself as “queer”

Speaking about her coming out, Bush writes: “I hate the idea of coming out in 2024. But I recognize that we are having this conversation in a year in which we will see the most aggressive attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community in the world of modern history.” For this reason, she wants to give coming out “the respect and honor it deserves.”

“I have found so much safety, respect and love in the queer community and have been an ally my entire life. When I came out, I already felt like this was my home,” Bush continued. “I think I’ve always known that my sexuality existed on the spectrum.” The word that best describes her right now is “queer.” “I can’t say it without smiling. And that feels pretty good.”
