One UI 5.1 still drains Galaxy S22 battery, wait before updating

Samsung has started rolling out One UI 5.1 globally. The software overlay based on Android 13 is now available on the Galaxy S20, S21, S22, Z Fold 4, and Z Flip 4. It does not fix certain problems that appeared in the previous version.

According to Samsung, “the software overlay OneUI 5.1 should feature a more visually appealing interfacewith new features […] for an overall more convenient experience.” Many users disagree. The Android 13-based firmware update fixes some of the issues raised with 5.0, but it seems to create new ones.

Customers who have updated to the One UI 5.1 overlay for their Galaxy smartphone are experiencing crippling operating issues. Although raised upon the release of OneUI 5.0, the Galaxy S22’s excessive power consumption issue has yet to be addressed. Despite the update, smartphones are still as energy-intensive as ever.

Galaxy S21 and S22 overheat due to OneUI 5.1 upgrade

According to a Reddit member, the temperature rise could be due to the Samsung Keyboard, the native keyboard implemented by the overlay. For some unknown reason, the latter consumes more energy than before. The easiest solution would be, according to Samsung’s after-sales service, to clear the app’s cache and data and restart their smartphone. Other users complain about the lack of certain editing tools, photo features that were available on the Galaxy S23s but are sorely lacking on older devices.

Moreover, some features work poorly or not at all. For some, the color scheme is unusable, which makes any customization of the home screen impossible. For others, it’s the Bixby Assistant routines that no longer work. A much more annoying bug affects some Galaxy S21 or S22 users: they can no longer configure and use Google Wallet, which prevents them from making contactless payments with their smartphone.
