OnePlus 10 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Which one is right for you?

Choosing the right Android smartphone is much more complicated than with iPhones. In the field of smartphones powered by Google’s mobile operating system, there is plenty to choose from: Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola, or even Google itself offer a plethora of phones.

Enough to get in knots in the brain when making your choice. If you want a high-end flagship, the list narrows down to the recently released OnePlus 10 Pro, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the Google Pixel 6 Pro. To help you in your reflection, the ZDNet editorial team has compared the first two smartphones on this list to give you a verdict that will avoid any unpleasant surprises!

Radically opposite designs

The OnePlus 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra showcase two different approaches to industrial design. The former takes a no-holds-barred approach, with rounded corners and a lightweight body (201g), making the OnePlus 10 Pro surprisingly comfortable to hold, even with a protective case on. The S22 Ultra, on the other hand, takes design cues from its Note counterpart, with sharp angles and a boxy shape. This makes it possible to widen the surface of interaction at the cost of a less pleasant feeling of heaviness on a daily basis.

Still, both devices feature similarly sized screens. The OnePlus 10 Pro has a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel, capable of flexing between 1 and 120 Hz. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has a slightly larger 6.8-inch AMOLED panel, which also has the LTPO 2.0 technology for adaptive refresh rates. The result: whichever model you choose, you’ll enjoy a vibrant, crisp and color-accurate screen.

In both cases, the phones use the material Gorilla Glass Victus, which offers better resistance to drops and shocks. The back covers are also coated with a satin, matte finish, reducing fingerprints and marks that typically plague phones with a glossy exterior.

Unbeatable screens despite different approaches

Beneath the screens of these two devices are two key differences: the front-facing cameras and the in-screen fingerprint sensors. Since the advent of punch-hole cameras, OnePlus has kept its front-facing camera in the top left corner of its screens. On the Samsung side, the punch is now housed in the center of the screen. Both cameras are small enough to remain unobtrusive and, in general, are indeed better than the notch design of the iPhone.

The OnePlus 10 Pro uses an in-screen optical fingerprint sensor, while Samsung opted for an ultrasonic sensor. In this case, the latter proves to be the most efficient, provided that you use 3D mapping to precisely record your fingerprints. Whether you’re in the dark or your fingers are wet, the Samsung’s ultrasonic sensor is more likely to successfully unlock than the OnePlus 10 Pro. That’s not to say the latter doesn’t perform well: it’s just as fast and uses light reflections rather than pressure to scan your finger.

Other hardware differences between these two smartphones include the side alert slider of the OnePlus, which is similar to that of the iPhone. Going from one click to another, the phone goes into silent, vibrating or sound mode. If the S22 Ultra does not have a physical cursor, it makes up for it with its native S Pen, located at the bottom left of the device.

Whether you’re a creative, a student or a Galaxy Note fan, the S Pen is a Samsung experience that no other manufacturer has been able to replicate. Finally, let’s talk about water and dust resistance. Although not all OnePlus 10 Pro are IP68 certified, it can be inferred that the device will withstand normal splashes and dives. On the other hand, whichever Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra you buy, the device will come with IP68 certification. This is one of the other features that justify its higher price.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

The OnePlus 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra both feature the latest performance-wise Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processors. In the Geekbench 5 test, the Samsung beats the OnePlus with a single-core score of 1,232 (vs. 985), but falls short with a multi-core score of 3,433 (vs. 3,446). Graphics-intensive gaming, multitasking, and loading everyday apps are no problem for these two devices.

Still, if you’re looking for a phone with as much RAM and storage as possible, the S22 Ultra is the best choice. It comes in 12 and 16GB RAM configurations, with storage capacities ranging from 128GB to 1TB. The OnePlus lags behind despite its 12GB/256GB capacity. Both devices also have their own overlays on Android 12.

While OnePlus’ OxygenOS system is no longer the “stock Android” alternative, it’s still bloatware-free and animations are smooth in apps. Samsung’s OneUI software is a bit more complex, with native Samsung apps pre-installed and a host of widgets and features. Although the learning curve is wider for the Galaxy device, it leaves a greater impression that you get what you pay for.

In terms of connectivity, the OnePlus and Samsung support 5G. However, the OnePlus 10 Pro does not support all upcoming frequencies of the new generation of mobile technologies, unlike the S22 Ultra, which supports all 5G bands, which allows the device to to eventually have the “best” 5G… Once the operators have deployed their stand-alone 5G networks, which is not for tomorrow!

Battery level, both smartphones are equipped with 5000 mAh cells which, according to our tests, have proven that they can work all day. And when you need to refuel, OnePlus takes a demanding lead with 80W SuperVOOC charging that can take the 10 Pro from 0% to 100% in less than 30 minutes. This is to be compared with the 45W limit of the Samsung. When it comes to wireless charging, the OnePlus also has the edge thanks to its 50W speeds versus the S22 Ultra’s 15W.

Cameras: advantage to Samsung!

It is undeniable that we rely more than ever on the cameras of our smartphones. Whether capturing a special moment, taking a group selfie or recording a performance, having a reliable point-and-shoot is a must. Fortunately, both the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and the OnePlus 10 Pro take stable, high-quality photos and videos.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra leads the way with its quad-camera setup on the back, featuring a 108MP main lens, 12MP ultra-wide, and two 10MP telephoto lenses for natural depth of field and photos with zoom. When it comes to capturing portraits, Samsung’s cameras have proven to be among the best, precisely blurring the background of subjects while keeping the front sharp and clear.

By comparison, OnePlus’ second-generation camera, tuned by Hasselblad, has also shown itself to be able to compete with the greats. The 10 Pro is equipped with a 48MP main lens, a 50MP ultra-wide, and an 8MP telephoto lens. While not as vivid or punchy as Samsung’s, OnePlus’ camera produces more natural-looking photos, which some of you might prefer.

Both phones have built-in Pro modes that let you fine-tune the ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and focus of the respective camera systems. Also, you are able to take RAW photos, which process the imagery in the most minimal way so that you can adjust the coloring in post. Simply put, no matter which phone you buy, you’ll have a camera suitable for photographers of all skill levels.

Unique features

Finally, let’s talk about the unique features of each phone, starting with the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. The biggest single selling point is the aforementioned S Pen. After a decade of experience perfecting the stylus (via the Galaxy Note), the S Pen is now more useful than ever. In addition to doodling and taking notes with its 4,096 sensitivity levels, the pen can be used as a Bluetooth remote for presentations, remote photo taking or gesture controls

For business and productivity, the S22 Ultra can also be hooked up to an external display to enable Samsung DeX. With the latter, the Galaxy smartphone replicates an almost full-fledged desktop experience. The OnePlus 10 Pro lacks this feature, which makes it less appealing to consumers who travel. Enough to make the S22 Ultra the must-have you need, despite all the qualities demonstrated by its competitor of the day.

There remains the question of the price, lower on the side of OnePlus, which may be able to tip the scales in favor of the latter. Anyway, if you opt for one of these two smartphones, you will not be disappointed, to say the least!
