OnePlus draws inspiration from the iconic Pixel Magic Eraser

OnePlus must adopt AI in the face of competition from Samsung and Google on smartphone interfaces. The brand will launch its own magic eraser, its “AI Eraser” on several of its models.

For several years, one of the arguments of the Pixel Experience of Google smartphones has been the famous Magic Eraser. It simply allows you to erase a slightly disturbing element from a photo, like that unbearable tourist who passes in front of the waterfall with which you want to take a photo. OnePlus wants to get a little more into artificial intelligence for its Android OxygenOS interface. This is why the brand will launch its own magic eraser.

A magic eraser for OnePlus smartphones: it’s coming very soon

It was this Wednesday, April 3, that OnePlus announced that it wanted to deploy a new feature based on generative AI, called “ AI Eraser“, Or “AI Eraser” in French. The idea is to be able to modify or delete elements that you don’t like in a photo. All by opening a photo in the OxygenOS gallery and selecting the objects you want to see disappear. Then, the tool analyzes the different elements of the image to remove the selected ones. This AI replaces elements by automatically recreating the background to blend into the environment around the replaced area.

For now, the feature will be gradually rolled out across the world throughout the month of April. Five models are compatible: the OnePlus 11, the OnePlus 12, the OnePlus 12R, the OnePlus Open as well as the OnePlus Nord CE 4, its mid-range smartphone launched on April 1 (but not in France a priori).

AI on OxygenOS: where are we?

For several years now, OnePlus smartphones have offered features with this technology, including for photography. For example, photos of your loved ones are sorted for each person, which allows you to have independent folders for each of your friends or family members, or even your pets. There is also Breeno Touch, which scans the smartphone screen to make suggestions for associated services.

However, for OnePlus President Kinder Liu, the AI ​​Eraser deployed today is only “the first step in our vision to unleash user creativity with AI and revolutionize the future of photo editing“. We can predict that other AI functionalities are planned by the brand and Kinder Liu himself admitted this: some will still arrive in 2024.
