OnePlus launches its Ace Racing Edition, an efficient and inexpensive smartphone

A few weeks after the announcement of its Ace, OnePlus launched its Ace Racing Edition on Tuesday in China. The device makes some concessions to hit the market at an even more affordable price than its big brother.

Launching in China on May 17, the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition is a more affordable version of the OnePlus Ace announced last month. This new model makes some compromises, especially in terms of display, to launch itself on the Chinese market with an even more attractive price placement.

Its starting price is thus set at 2000 yuan for the 8 GB RAM / 128 GB storage model, or just over 280 euros excluding taxes. For comparison, the classic OnePlus Ace is available from 2,500 yuan, or around 350 euros excluding tax.

For this price, the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition is counting on a slightly more modest, but balanced technical sheet, relying in particular on the SoC MediaTek Dimensity 8100 -Max. Engraved in 5 nm, the latter does not lack resources for a mid-range processor: it approaches the performance level of a Snapdragon 888, Qualcomm’s spearhead throughout 2021.

An LCD screen to reduce costs… but still 120 Hz

It is mainly on the screen that OnePlus saves money. The brand drops the 6.7-inch AMOLED panel of its classic OnePlus Ace to replace it with a 6.59-inch IPS LCD screen, capable of going up to 120 Hz. As GSMArena points out, this is a quality LCD screen, capable of displaying the entire color spectrum. That said, it is not a 10-bit panel and its maximum luminance does not exceed 600 nits.

The device has a 5000 mAh battery that is compatible with OnePlus’ 67 W fast charging. This recharging technology allows you to recover 80% autonomy in 29 minutes on the mains.

On the photo side, the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition has three rear photo sensors: a 64 Mpx main module (capable of recording 4K videos at 30 FPS), an 8 Mpx ultra wide-angle module and a macro camera. On the front, there is a 16 Mpx selfie sensor, housed in the upper left corner of the screen.

Finally, note the presence of a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and support for aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC standards for Bluetooth headphones. Surprisingly, OnePlus also worked with Razer for this model. The OnePlus Ace Racing Edition can thus claim virtual keyboards supposed to reproduce the experience of Razer BlackWidow and Mercury keyboards thanks to a haptic feedback system.

As mentioned above, the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition is available from 2000 yuan in the basic version (8 GB / 128 GB), but there are also versions 8 GB of RAM / 256 GB of storage (for 2200 yuan, i.e. 310 euros excluding VAT) and 12 GB of RAM / 256 GB of storage (for 2500 yuan, or around 350 euros excluding VAT). The device is finally available in two colors: dark gray and sky blue.

It is not known at this stage if it will arrive in France, potentially under another name, or if it will remain exclusive to the Chinese market.
