With the OnePlus Open, OnePlus finally has its own foldable with a slider for alarms. The camera section in particular looks quite similar to the OnePlus 11.

The manufacturer had already announced a foldable in 2021, which later turned out to be two OnePlus 9 models glued together including a discount campaign. Everything will be different in 2023. This time there really is a OnePlus in folding format!

How much should the OnePlus Open cost?

The OnePlus Open will not be released in Germany due to a legal dispute. In Austria, however, the situation is different. In the online store there, OnePlus gives a list price of 1,799 euros.

What colors does the OnePlus Open come in?

In Austria you can only buy the OnePlus Open in Emerald Dusk. The color is reminiscent of a dark green. In other countries, the smartphone is also available in Voyager Black. The back of the smartphone does not seem to have a smooth surface in this version. In addition, at 5.9 millimeters, it is slightly thicker than a smartphone with the Eternal Dusk color. This is only 5.8 millimeters.

This is what the new foldable has to offer

In addition to the larger display on the inside, a booklet foldable like the OnePlus Open has another special feature: the hinge. OnePlus seems to be particularly proud of this. For example, the manufacturer states that TÜV Rheinland has certified the hinge as having a durability of 1,000,000 folds.

The weight should also be taken into account. OnePlus itself states that at 245 grams, its foldable is only five grams heavier than the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Two displays in booklet format

OnePlus calls the displays Dual ProXDR. The foldable display is 7.82 inches in size and has a Flexi-fluid AMOLED panel with LTPO 3.0. The refresh rate is dynamically between one Hertz and 120 Hertz. The typically 1,400 nits and maximum 2,800 nits bright display has a resolution of 2,440 x 2,268 pixels. The aspect ratio is almost 1:1.

The same technology is used on the front screen. However, the resolution is probably slightly different due to the design at 2,484 x 1,116 pixels. The aspect ratio is also slightly different at 20:9. The dynamic refresh rate is also only between 10 Hetz and 240 Hertz. Both displays can support Dolby Vision and HDR.

Hasselblad camera

The rear camera consists of a 48-megapixel Sony LYT-T808 with a size of 1/1.43 inches as the main sensor. It has a focal length of 24 millimeters and an aperture of f/1.7. In addition to optical and electronic image stabilization, there is also autofocus.

In addition to the main camera, there is a telephoto camera with three times optical zoom and six times “in-sensor zoom” and an ultra-wide camera. The ultra-wide camera has a Sony IMX581 with 48 megapixels and a field of view of 114 degrees. The telephoto camera has a resolution of 64 megapixels. The OV64B serves as a sensor for this camera. Digitally, it can even magnify up to 120x with Ultra Res Zoom.

There is also a multi-channel color temperature sensor and LED flash.

The OnePlus Open has two front cameras. A 20 megapixel camera is located on the outside display. If you open the smartphone, you will see a slightly better 32-megapixel camera.

OnePlus 11 in a short test
First impression

In recent years, OnePlus has slipped more and more into average, at least subjectively. The short test reveals whether the new OnePlus 11 can change this.

That’s under the hood

OnePlus already relies on Qualcomm in other devices. This is also the case with the OnePlus Open. The smartphone has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 16 gigabytes of LPDDR5X RAM. In the specifications, the manufacturer specifies additional RAM expansions of four, eight or 12 gigabytes. You get 512 gigabytes of memory, which you have to share with the OxygenOS 13.2 operating system based on Android 13, as usual.

The OnePlus Open’s battery has a capacity of 4,805 milliamp hours. They support fast charging with up to 67 watts. You charge the battery via USB-C.

You can use 5G and LTE with your smartphone. It also has Bluetooth 5.3 and WiFi 7. NFC support is also included. Dual SIM is possible via two nano SIM slots.

Multitasking features

With a booklet smartphone, the focus is often on multitasking, especially on the main display, in order to make use of the size of the screen.

OnePlus presents ways to split the screen to display two apps. To do this you have to swipe with two fingers in the middle of the screen. You can then make further settings. You can also drag and drop files from one app to another.

With the function called Open Canvas you can even open a third app. Then one of the three apps is pushed to the edge of the display. It seems as if the app is no longer completely visible.

Of course, some things make more sense just because of the size alone. OnePlus points out that a larger display makes it easier for you to read books, for example.
