Online commerce continues its momentum with a jump of 15% in 2021 in France

Online sales exceeded 129 billion euros last year.

Online sales of products and services continued their momentum in 2021 in France to exceed 129 billion euros, an increase of 15.1% compared to 2020, yet already exceptional, according to the Federation of e-commerce and distance selling (Fevad) on Thursday.

The Fevad includes services in its calculation, a large part of which corresponds to transport, tourism and leisure. This sector is on the rise (+44%) given the numerous restrictions in 2020 to fight against the Covid-19 epidemic. But sales of goods also continued to grow, by +7% compared to 2020 and above all by +42% compared to 2019.

The place taken by e-commerce in the retail trade, that is to say the sale of products, is estimated at 14.1% by the Fevad. This is higher than in 2020 (13.4%) and especially than in 2019 (9.8%). The retail trade weighs around 500 billion euros, and the sale of products online is estimated by Fevad at 66.7 billion euros.

Amazon tops most visited sites

Another stunning figure: in one year, online sales sites have recorded more than 2.1 billion transactions, an increase of 16% compared to 2020, with an average basket of 60 euros, further details the trade federation online, which brings together some 750 companies.

A survey conducted by Médiamétrie as part of Fevad’s annual review also draws up a “top 20» of the most visited e-commerce sites and applications in France. The American giant Amazon comes in first with nearly 37 million unique visitors per month, ahead of Leboncoin.fr (27 million) and CDiscount (23 million). The following places are occupied by Fnac, Vinted, Carrefour, E.Leclerc, AliExpress, Booking.com and Lidl.

Médiamétrie estimates that almost 47 million Internet users, or 74% of French people, have consulted at least one of the sites or applications in its top 20 each month. Note that this survey, carried out from January 6 to 12 among 1,002 elderly Internet buyers 15 years and over, relates to the sites visited, not to the actual transactions.
