- The 2nd round of the Australian Open in Melbourne means the end of the line for Jil Teichmann (WTA 34).
- In the 1: 6, 2: 6 against the Belarusian Viktoria Azarenka (WTA 25), the Biel native has no chance.
- Later on Wednesday night (around 5:00 a.m.) Belinda Bencic (WTA 22) plays her second round match against Amanda Anisimova (WTA 60). We show the game live on the SRF Sport App.
With an almost uncanny efficiency, Victoria Azarenka played her way into the 3rd Melbourne round. 2 break chances per set, 2 breaks each and consequently a discussion-free 2-set win. In addition, the two-time Australian Open winner remained focused over the entire 1:12 hours of play and only recorded 13 unforced errors in the statistics (of 12 winners).
Jil Teichmann on the other side was not to be envied. Despite numerous setbacks, he fought bravely, but practically nothing wanted to succeed. With service, she was able to generate little to no pressure at the Kia Arena, fielding only 47% of her 1st serves. At the same time, she missed all (!) of her 5 break chances when she served Azarenka.
But she also struggled with the heat, some late spectators and herself. It just wasn’t her day.
At least Teichmann can leave Australia with a good memory: For the first time ever, the 24-year-old from Biel survived the first round in Melbourne.
