Only a “world car” – Worldwide bestseller comparison: How the world drives

In the USA, trucks and pick-ups dominated the new car bestseller list. Electric cars in China. And Europe is becoming a country for small cars. The list of the best-selling passenger cars in 2022 differs enormously in the three most important world markets. But only one model has real potential to become a world bestseller. That makes it into all top ten rankings at the same time.

Only one car makes it into all top ten rankings at the same time: Tesla’s Model Y, which comes in second in China, sixth in the USA and just under tenth in Europe. Even if you widen the focus a bit, the lack of common bestsellers is noticeable. In the list of 25 of all three markets drawn up by the consulting firm Inovev, there is only the Toyota Corolla, which plays a major role in Europe as well as in China and the USA. The new car market in China has long been dominated by e-cars . The absolute bestseller in 2022 was the Wuling Hongguang EV (around 570,000 units), a small electric car that came from a joint project between General Motors and SAIC and already dominated the market in its earlier combustion engine variant. The model is not available in Europe and the USA the market. The same is currently true for the BYD song DM in third place. After strong growth, the plug-in hybrid crossover has pushed the VW Lavida into fourth place, a compact notchback sedan that the SAIC VW joint venture is building locally exclusively for the Chinese market 2022 also the best-selling in the USA: the pick-up Ford F-150 (around 725,000 units). On his heels are two direct competitors with almost identical designs, the Chevrolet Silverado and the RAM pick-up. The first classic sedan in the list is the Toyota Camry in fifth place, behind the SUV model RAV4 from the same company. Otherwise, the crossover and off-road vehicles dominate the former sedan country. The former power seller Honda Civic, for example, only just manages to finish 25th. Europeans on a small foot Europe is not yet quite as crossover-heavy: the first two places go to small cars, with the Peugeot 208 (200,000 units) number one two of the cheap Dacia Sandero. The VW Golf is only third, just ahead of the Fiat 500 and the first crossover in the ranking, the VW T-Roc. In the following places there is a colorful mixture of small cars and small or extremely compact SUVs. Another Fiat micro car is also in the top spots with the Panda. German premium manufacturers are not represented in the European list of 25 cars. In China, the BMW 5 Series made it to 25th place with around 175,000 sales. The bottom line is that Germany remains a strong car country in the Middle Kingdom: with a 13 percent market share, VW including its local joint ventures is the strongest manufacturer ahead of the US, which is also strongly networked locally -Group General Motors with 10 percent. The Detroiters are also the market leader in their home country with 16 percent, just ahead of Toyota and clearly ahead of Ford. In Europe, VW (25 percent), Stellantis (18 percent) and Renault-Nissan (12 percent) dominate the market.
