Only cell phone light with you – young people were stuck in the dark on Traunstein

They had probably underestimated the Traunstein. Four young people set off too late on Thursday and fell into the darkness while descending. The poorly equipped boys didn’t have headlamps with them and had to call the mountain rescuers for help. The operation wasn’t over until around midnight.

On Thursday shortly after 9 p.m., the mountain rescuers in Gmunden received an emergency call from a group of four from Traunstein. The four boys from the Linz-Land district (17 to 21 years old) climbed the Mairalmsteig to the Traunstein in the afternoon around 1 p.m. It wasn’t until five hours later, around 6:30 p.m., that they set off down the Naturfreundesteig into the valley. Supplied with drinks. At this point in time, the sun was already setting in Gmunden, so the group fell into darkness. Apart from cell phone flashlights, they didn’t have any lights with them. At an altitude of almost 1,000 meters above sea level, they lost their way at 9 p.m. and alerted the mountain rescuers. The helpers climbed up with a team that night and were able to meet the boys. After a short supply of thermal jackets and drinks, the group was brought safely to the valley. The mountain rescuers’ operation only ended around midnight.
