Cavendish sprints to 31st Tour stage win

Mathieu van der Poel defends the yellow jersey on the fourth stage of the Tour de France, but it is not in danger either. A mass sprint brings the decision, Mark Cavendish builds on his impressive record. The Briton is only three days short of the record.

British cyclist Mark Cavendish won the fourth stage of the Tour de France. The 36-year-old from the Deceuninck-Quick Step team prevailed in the mass sprint after 150.4 kilometers between Redon and Fougeres in Brittany and celebrated his 31st stage victory in the Tour. The Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) successfully defended the overall leader’s yellow jersey.

Cavendish, who last triumphed at the Tour of France in 2016, relegated the French Nacer Bouhanni (Arkea-Samsic) and the Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) to their places. The best German was Andre Greipel (Israel Start-Up Nation) in tenth place.

Only the great Belgian Eddy Merckx, who won 34 times, celebrated more stage wins than Cavendish at the Tour of France.

More on that shortly.
