Disney + is starting a crime comedy in which an unequal trio solves a murder case on their own and records a podcast.

Disney + Star will launch a new series on August 31: “Only Murders in The Building”. At the beginning, two of the ten episodes are unlocked. The series is full of stars: The main roles are played by Steve Martin (76, “Roxanne”), Martin Short (71, “A matter of luck”) and Selena Gomez (29, “Spring Breakers”). The two experienced comedians and the young singer and actress make an unusual trio at first glance, but they complement each other perfectly. Just like their characters in the curious crime comedy.

“Only Murders In The Building”: Unusual trio investigates a murder case

Actually, they have nothing in common, apart from the fact that they all live in the same house, in the Arconia on New York’s Upper West Side. Charles (Martin) is a former series star who lives withdrawn and prefers to avoid conversations. The talkative Oliver (Short), who worked with rather moderate success on Broadway, is different. And then there is Mabel Mora (Gomez), a young girl who usually gives other people the cold shoulder.

When they have to leave the house because of an investigation, the three meet by chance in a restaurant around the corner and discover their common passion: true crime podcasts. The three hobby snoopers are quickly convinced that an alleged suicide in their house must be a murder case. Without further ado, the unusual trio takes up the investigation and documents it in its own podcast. But in doing so, they are apparently targeted by the murderer, who may live in the same building as the three hobby investigators.

True crime meets comedy: a series like no other

The large age difference between the three main characters is refreshing and shows that the same interests can exist across generations. Although they are all pulling together to solve the case, the stories behind the three self-appointed investigators are also told, giving the series more depth and emotion. Because not only the other residents of the house and the surrounding area, but also the three themselves have secrets.

At the same time, stereotypical features of getting older are parodied, such as resting on one’s laurels or being a loner. New York society is getting its fat too. Simple, flat jokes meet sophisticated conversation. And yet the creators manage to portray the murder case to be resolved in a gloomy and exciting way and to permanently create suspense with a lot of unpredictable twists and turns.

The extraordinary, ever closer friendship between the three characters is represented by Martin, Short and Gomez in an outstanding way. And other stars are also on board: Singer Sting (69, “Desert Rose”), for example, who plays himself, is caught in the crosshairs of the Investigations. The series convinces with heart, an exciting plot and lots of laughs. Conclusion: absolutely worth seeing!
