Onset of winter – snow and frost remain with us

Winter picked up speed across the whole of Styria at the weekend – it will continue to be frosty for the next few days. You can still soak up the sun in many places until Wednesday before the next load of snow comes on Thursday night.

The Upper Murtal and parts of the Ennstal have been transformed into a magnificent winter landscape over the weekend – which you can enjoy at the beginning of the week in bright sunshine. While a good 30 centimeters of fresh snow has fallen in Murau or on the Stolzalpe, in the south and east of the country it is as light as possible. Here the temperatures only allowed a few snowflakes and sleet. It was always enough for mirror-smooth streets, the fire brigades had to go out for a few minor accidents. It gets frosty on the public holiday. , knows meteorologist Hannes Rieder von der Zamg. Despite uncomfortable temperatures, there are a few hours of sunshine on Wednesday up to and including St. Mary’s Day. “On the public holiday, the maximum daytime temperatures should stay below freezing point,” says Rieder. Snowfall will already set in again in the night on Thursday – and the whole of Styria will be wrapped in white splendor over the course of Thursday. Up to 15 centimeters of snow could also fall in more southerly regions. Tourers watch out: Considerable avalanche danger! On Saturday there was already the first avalanche in Triebental, a 29-year-old ski tourer was buried and injured. In northern Upper Styria there is a considerable risk of avalanches above the tree line. Arnold Studeregger from the Avalanche Warning Service Styria recommends: “You should currently avoid steep gullies and shady sides.” In many areas, the fresh snow has been blown and the snow cover is very unstable.
