Plug-in hybrids available in Sports Tourer station wagon and 5-door, these cars are supposed to offer a compromise between comfort, dynamism and a certain environmental awareness. At least according to the manufacturer which belongs to the Stellantis group. “The new Astra GSe and Astra Sports Tourer GSe are the ideal cars to launch our dynamic new sub-brand, perfectly in line with our strategy to become a 100% electric brand by 2028”says Florian Huettl, CEO of Opel.
The powertrain is known with a 1.6 Puretech 4-cylinder coupled to an electric motor powered by a 12.40 kWh battery. The whole develops 225 hp for a torque of 360 Nm. In fact, the Opel Astra did not experience the 225 PHEV versions of its Peugeot 308 GT cousin when it came out and is therefore now back with this powertrain under the GSe label.
Given the overall modest weight and power, we will be far from the manufacturer’s more radical proposals. Indeed, the previous version of the Astra OPC developed 280 hp for a weight of 1475 kg with a limited slip differential…
However, the German manufacturer has equipped these new Astra GSe with a specific chassis, lowered by 10 mm. The steering calibration is specific to the GSe, while the front and rear suspension springs have laws specially adapted to dynamic driving, without neglecting comfort. The shock absorbers are equipped with the FSD function, which makes it possible to obtain different damping laws on the compression of the suspension and the roll of the body. ESP settings are also specific to GSe models, with a delayed activation threshold to suit dynamic driving.
In terms of looks, the specific front shield and mask, as well as the GSe emblem on the tailgate sign the car’s ambitions. 18-inch light-alloy wheels, inspired by the Manta GSe concept, are available. Inside, the seats certified by the AGR ergonomist label receive a new alcantara upholstery.
The price is not yet revealed, but the Peugeot 308 GT 225 PHEV cousin starts at €43,300. As a reminder, the Astra OPC was displayed at €33,990 in 2018, which, reduced to an average calculated inflation of 10.9%, would give a price of €37,704. We therefore hope that this new Astra GSe will not be too far off in terms of tariffs.
