A violent thunderstorm with hail on Wednesday night caused major damage to the miniature open-air museum in Melide.
Despite the damage, the Swissminiatur remains open.
The hailstones the size of table tennis balls have also ruined the harvests of vegetable farmers in the Sottoceneri.
According to the museum, the team at Swissminiatur has been repairing the “serious damage” since the morning hours. Some models in the famous open-air museum were only inaugurated this year. According to the pictures, the model of the Piazza Grande in Locarno and that of the Sion train station are badly damaged.

Thunderstorms also destroy vegetable crops
The hail also hit vegetable farmers hard in the southern part of Ticino. Up to 50 percent of the harvest at the organic farm Azienda Agricoli Bianchi near Arogno has been destroyed, an employee told Keystone-SDA.
Such a violent thunderstorm had not swept over the region for two years. The organic farm maintains grapevines, fruit crops and olive trees, among other things.
