The Goals of Good Open Source Governance, Based on Abraham Maslow’s Pyramid of Human Motivations, by OW2 (GGI VF p. 5)
In 2021, the OSPO (Open Source Program Office) Alliance was launched by several European non-profit organizations: OW2, Eclipse Foundation, OpenForum Europe and Foundation for Public Code (later joined by several open source contributors, Red Hat, Orange and Microsoft among others). A year later, the OSPO Alliance announces the release of version 1.1 of the methodological framework proposed by the GGI initiative (Good Governance Initiative) for good open source governance. “This release includes major enhancements, including a translation process, automated deployment, and early use case, showcased at Open Source Experience (OSXP), November 8-9. GGI’s methodological framework helps assess and improve open source awareness, compliance and governance within organizations.”
Evaluation process, in 25 activities
“As part of the tools provided by the initiative, the GGI Handbook “GGI Handbook” distinguishes 25 activities, from analysis of software components and development best practices, to training, HR and executive education , which are organized into objectives, from discovery to engagement and strategy. This assessment process results in dashboards to describe and assess how each activity is implemented in an organization.
Among the novelties of this version 1.1, are announced translations of the GGI manual (“an open translation process has been set up and is based on the open source software weblate. German and French versions are already available, and three others languages are being translated: Portuguese, Spanish, Italian”) and automated deployment (allowing “any user to quickly install their own instance on GitLab and access a custom dashboard using the My GGI Board interface”).
A first implementation and a customer testimonial with the City of Paris were presented to OSXP by Philippe Bareille, Open Source manager.
Other developments are announced for the next few months, “such as the enrichment of the manual, the addition of new metrics to better monitor the progress made, the deployment on several platforms and more events offered through the series of OnRamp webinars”.
