It has been two months since the “Wuambushu” operation was launched to fight against unsanitary housing, caused by delinquency and illegal immigration on the island of Mayotte. On this occasion, Gérald Darmanin will go there this weekend to take stock of the situation.

Two months after the launch of the “Wuambushu” operation, Gérald Darmanin went to Mayotte to take stock of the situation. The government had instigated it in order to help the population faced with problems linked to illegal immigration, in particular unsanitary conditions. This is the first visit by a member of the government there since April 24.

1,000 substandard housing to be destroyed

It has therefore been two months since the French authorities deployed hundreds of additional police forces in the archipelago. 400 police and gendarmes are still on the island according to the prefect of Mayotte. It must be said that the start of this operation “Wuambushu”, which means “recovery” in Mahorais, had been marked by some confusion because of legal setbacks. The blocking by the Comoros of the return of their nationals was also among the obstacles to the smooth running of the operation.

Making an initial assessment is therefore the whole point of this visit by Gérald Darmanin, even if the police are not about to come to the end of their enterprise. The State plans indeed in the coming months to destroy 1,000 boxes identified as unsanitary housing.
