Oppenheimer: Christopher Nolan the subject of a hoax at the BAFTA 2024, the English Oscars

Did you see Emma Thomas’ acceptance speech when “Oppenheimer” won the BAFTA for Best Film, and wonder who the person behind it was? It’s normal: she wasn’t part of the team.

For a bit, this joke would have eclipsed Oppenheimer’s victory at the BAFTAs: with seven awards (including those for Best Film, Best Direction or Best Actor), Christopher Nolan’s latest feature film is the big winner of this 77th edition. And he is more than ever a favorite for the Oscars.

A little joker, however, almost made his success take second place. Producer of the feature film, Emma Thomas received the BAFTA for Best Film alongside her husband Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy and… a complete stranger. Except for the subscribers of this YouTuber who is not his first attempt when it comes to entering prestigious award ceremonies.

“We take this very seriously and do not want to give him publicity by making further comments about him.”

The 2024 BAFTAs could nevertheless mark the end of hoaxes for him: “A prankster from social media was taken out by security last night after joining the latest prize winners on stage”we can read in a press release from the Academy spokesperson. “We take this very seriously and do not want to give him publicity by making further comments about him.”

There is therefore very little chance of seeing it at the Césars this Friday, February 23, where Christopher Nolan will receive an honorary trophy while Oppenheimer is nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Nor at the Oscars on March 10.
