Oppenheimer surpasses Bohemian Rhapsody: a historic record for Christopher Nolan’s film

“Oppenheimer” is poised to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time!

Oppenheimer continues to surprise the world with his incredible box office performances. The biopic on the father of the atomic bomb, carried by Cillian Murphy and directed by Christopher Nolan, continues to break records and is on the verge of dethroning the king of biopics, Bohemian Rhapsody. Indeed, by the end of the day on September 17, the film will reach $912 million in revenue, becoming the highest-grossing biopic in history (via MovieWeb).

The 2018 feature film starring Rami Malek, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, was an absolute success upon release, grossing a total of $910.8 million at the box office. Oppenheimer, released in theaters last July alongside Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, far exceeded all expectations. According to Deadline, the estimated total through Friday is $903 million, with $586 million coming from the international box office. With the figures from Saturday and Sunday to come, this global sum should therefore reach 912 million dollars.

There are obviously some differences between the two films. For example, their budget. Bohemian Rhapsody had a much smaller budget, around $55 million, which could make its success more impressive since that ofOppenheimer exceeds $100 million. However, the Mercury biopic was rated PG-13, reaching a much wider audience than Nolan’s film, which is rated R.

However, the two films have a very important common element: Rami Malek. The Mr. Robot star is indeed part of the cast of both projects, of course, on very different scales. In Bohemian RhapsodyMalek is the undisputed star, while in Oppenheimerit has a much more restricted role, although quite decisive.

WILL OPPENHEIMER SURPASS THE DARK KNIGHT?

Since its release, Oppenheimer managed to establish itself as the third most successful production of the career of Christopher Nolan. Far surpassing two of his most acclaimed works: Interstellar and Inception. However, it currently sits behind The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, the final two parts of the filmmaker’s popular Batman trilogy.

Although it is difficult to know if the biopic will be able to surpass these two major blockbusters, whateverOppenheimer has achieved so far clearly shows that it could continue to surprise fans and those who attributed its success solely to its joint marketing campaign with Barbie: the phenomenon called “Barbenheimer”.

Nanar in sight… It’s Barbenheimer, a comedy that will bring together Barbie and Oppenheimer!

Oppenheimer is Nolan’s first film with Universal Pictures since leaving Warner Bros. after a conflict with Tenet. Although recent rumors indicate that Warner would like to bring him back, it seems difficult for Universal to let him go, given the huge impact his latest film is having.

According to other rumors, the director is also set to direct the next James Bond, a project in which Nolan has expressed interest on several occasions. It would therefore not be surprising if MGM and Amazon Studios pursued him for this new version of the 007 franchise after the departure of Daniel Craig.

Oppenheimer can be seen (again) at the cinema, in many remaining cinemas in France.
