After presenting a prototype last year (the Oppo X 2021), Oppo is preparing to market its expandable smartphone with a rollable screen as early as 2023.

While many see folding formats as the future of the mobile market, the alternative of expandable smartphones should not be overlooked. The latter also offer a hybrid device between the phone and the tablet, but through a rollable slab capable of deploying, often using a motorized system. Remember, we were able to take control of the stunning Oppo X 2021 which offered us a glimpse of this future.
However, this was only a prototype. The model exhibited by Oppo served above all to proudly display the technological know-how of the brand, inducing in passing that the manufacturer was actively exploring this track. This work could materialize next year with a finalized and marketed product.

Oppo vs. Samsung
Oppo has every interest in betting big on this kind of format. Already a giant in the industry, the brand has never hidden its intentions to make an impression with its innovations. In foldable smartphones, Samsung has taken a considerable lead, especially with the very successful Galaxy Z Fold 3. Note however that the Oppo Find N already offers an interesting challenge in this sector thanks to its compact dimensions in the folded format.
However, on the format of expandable smartphones, it is Oppo’s work that seems the most advanced. On this track of innovation, the Chinese group would not run behind its Korean competitor and would on the contrary take the lead by donning the pioneer’s costume. The Oppo X 2021 wasn’t ready for market yet, but it already held a lot of tantalizing promise. A proper launch in 2023 would therefore not be surprising.
