Opposed to the war in Ukraine, the German coach of Lokomotiv Moscow resigns

He only stayed three months at the head of Lokomotiv Moscow. Opposed to the war led by Russia in Ukraine, Markus Gisdol has resigned with immediate effect from his post as coach of the Moscow club.

The German coach was appointed to the Lokomotiv bench at the end of November in place of Ralf Rangnick, who left for Manchester United. And if he had signed up until next June, he preferred to leave and return to Germany before the end of his contract with the Russian team. A decision taken to protest against Vladimir Putin’s decision to attack Ukraine.

“I cannot exercise my vocation in a country whose leader is responsible for a war of aggression in the heart of Europe. This does not correspond to my values, which is why I resigned with immediate effect from my position as coach of Lokomotiv Moscow,” the German coach told the daily Bild on Tuesday.

“I cannot be on the training ground in Moscow, training players, demanding professionalism and, a few kilometers away, orders are being given that cause great suffering to a whole people. It is my personal decision and I am absolutely convinced of it,” he added.

Lokomotiv Moscow, currently 7and of the Russian championship and who must face Yenisey this Thursday in the Russian Cup, is looking for a new coach to end the season.
