Optoma presents the UHD55, its new 4K video projector

The brand, which created the very first short-throw 4K UHD projector in 2016, nevertheless forgot to put HDMI 2.1 on its new device.

Optoma presented its new video projector, the UHD55. The latter is based on DLP technology, an extremely widespread solution, unlike Sony, which has chosen to abandon light bulbs in favor of laser technology for its future models.

DLP technology consists of passing the light from the bulb through a chromatic wheel before directing it using a mirror. This technology offers a very good quality/price ratio and allows good contrasts.

The characteristics of the UHD55

The device offers a 4K resolution image with a maximum brightness of 3,600 lumens and a theoretical maximum size (if you have enough perspective) of 300 inches. The contrast is announced as 1,200,000:1 which, according to the company, allows serene use day and night provided that the projection support (wall or screen) is not directly illuminated.

The device is HDR and HLG compatible, but no mention is made of any Dolby Vision support. The DCI-P3 color gamut is covered at 97% when using the shutter and the device also supports 3D (side by side, top and bottom or frame sequential).

Optoma also offers a gaming mode, allowing latency to be reduced to 16 ms in 4 K. However, with the absence of an HDMI 2.1 port, the device will not be able to refresh a 4K image at more than 60 fps. By connecting a PC to it, it will nevertheless be possible to take advantage of 1080 p 240 Hz and an input lag of 4 ms (or less).

The device is compatible with Alexa, Google Assitant and IFTTT. Bulb life is advertised at 15,000 hours with Dynamic Black mode enabled. The UHD55 is already available for sale from Optoma partners, at the recommended price of €1,599.
