(Boursier.com) — Vodacom And Orange would discuss a potential strategic partnership in Africa. The two groups could join forces to develop and reduce their respective infrastructure bills. According to ‘Bloomberg’ sources close to the matter, the two telecom operators are exploring agreements in overlapping markets, notably in Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and are examining other possibilities to work together.
The talks would focus on potential deals to share infrastructure and jointly build connectivity in rural areas, according to the sources. No final decision has been made and the two companies may not find common ground. Vodacom, Africa’s largest mobile operator, is also in talks with service providers in other countries where it operates, agency sources said.
“We are exploring partnerships with other mobile operators and financial investors in the countries where we operate,” a Vodacom representative said in a statement sent to ‘Bloomberg’. “Our goal is to potentially reduce deployment and rural connectivity costs, helping to lower communications costs and reduce the digital divide.”
The subsidiary of Vodafone and Orange are each striving to expand in Africa to capture the market’s explosive growth, particularly for mobile services where young, tech-savvy users are spending more time on their devices to access a whole host of offerings.
