Organic farming in search of a new lease of life

“All Organic All Roose”. As its name suggests, this farm in the Oise has opted for agriculture that respects the environment and its destiny is in the hands of the Roose family. The curious who want to discover it can go there on Sunday 6 March. Indeed, it participates, with 250 other farms spread throughout the national territory, in the second edition of the operation “Salon à la ferme”, organized by the trade union of the Confédération paysanne, parallel to the Salon de l’agriculture.

Visiting an organic farm is an opportunity to rediscover what makes this type of agriculture special. A moment that is more necessary than ever, when the link seems to have loosened somewhat with the consumer. In any case, this is what the sales figures show in the supermarket shelves. “Organic food products ended the year 2021 with a drop in value in the supermarkets of 3.6% compared to 2020, while all food products finished at 0.4%. The weight of organic in consumer products has fallen from 5.7% of turnover in 2020 to 5.5% in 2021”estimates Emily Mayer, of the institute of studies IRI, which scrutinizes the purchases of the French in store.

It specifies that warning signs of a slowdown in this market, which had been very dynamic until then, were perceptible as early as 2019. time, consumption benchmarks.

The break in rhythm finally came to light in April 2021, with a shift into negative territory. For now, the trend is not for recovery. “The year [2022] starts hard. Organic turnover in January is at 8.7% compared to January 2021, when all consumer food products are at 2.9% in supermarkets”, says Mme Mayer.

Lower price paid to breeder

This sudden slowdown caused a shock wave in production. The crisis has affected the egg and vegetable sectors, but above all the milk sector. Even if, in the summer of 2021, the dairy giant Lactalis and its competitor Sodiaal announced the end of support for farmers in the transition to organic farming (AB), it is difficult to quickly curb the flow. In 2022, nearly 100 million liters of AB-stamped milk should be added to the 1.3 billion liters collected a year earlier. Breeders who started their conversion two years ago are entering the market.
