Surprise in the Oscar nominations: The German film “Nothing New in the West” is included nine times.

A German film is one of the big winners in the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards. When Riz Ahmed (40) and Allison Williams (34) announced on Tuesday (January 24) the films that will compete for the world’s most important film award on March 12, “Nothing new in the West” was mentioned nine times.

“Nothing New in the West” beats the record of “Das Boot”

The remake of Erich Maria Remarque’s anti-war novel was not only nominated for “Best International Film” but also in the main category “Best Film”. There were also seven other nominations for the Netflix production, for music, sound, screenplay, make-up, equipment, camera and visual effects.

Not even “Das Boot” was that successful. The classic received six nominations in 1982, a previous record for a German film. Only two non-English language films garnered more nominations, with ten nominations, “Roma” and Hong Kong actioner “Tiger & Dragon.”

Together with “The Banshees of Inisherin”, “Nothing New in the West” is the second most successful of this year’s nominations. The Irish tragic comedy with Colin Farrell (46) has also been proposed nine times.

Big winner is “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. The multiverse spectacle received 11 nominations, including four cast member mentions.

Best Film: Blockbuster en Masse

The Academy’s campaign to nominate popular films won in the most important category, “Best Film”. For a few years, those responsible have been trying to encourage voters to propose blockbusters. This is to stop the decline in ratings. Successful this year. With “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick” there are two box office hits among these ten nominees:

Debutante ball for actors:

There was a big surprise for the main actresses. Nobody really expected Andrea Riseborough (41). The nomination of Ana de Armas (34) was not a matter of course either. Her film “Blonde”, in which she embodies screen legend Marilyn Monroe, finally cleared up yesterday in the nomination of the anti-Oscar Golden Raspberry.

Unusual sight for the main actors. All five actors are nominated for an Oscar for the first time. That only happens once in a blue moon.

There are also four debutantes among the supporting actresses. Only Angela Bassett has Oscar experience (64). Among the newcomers is Jamie Lee Curtis (64), who is on the list for the first time in her long career for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”.

Same picture with the supporting actors. Only old star Judd Hirsch (87) can call himself an Oscar nominee here. Even if it was first mentioned more than 40 years ago, in 1981 for “A Completely Normal Family”.

Lady Gaga and Rihanna nominated for “Best Song”.

The “Best Song” category has a top-class cast this year. Lady Gaga (36) is represented with “Hold My Hand”, her song from “Top Gun: Maverick”. Top star colleague Rihanna (34) is involved in “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.

The musical competition consists of: “Naatu Naatu” from the Indian blockbuster “RRR”, “This is a Life” from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Applause” from “Tell It Like a Woman”. The latter song was penned by Diane Warren (66), who has been nominated in this category for the 14th time.
