Sandra Hülser and “The Teacher’s Room” included, “Oppenheimer” top, “Barbie” rather a flop: The winners and losers of the Oscar nominations.

As expected: Barbenheimer also dominates at the Oscars. Even if there is a clear winner here. “Oppenheimer” achieved 13 standardizations – the most ever. ““Barbie” managed to get 8 mentions.

The actors Zazie Beetz (32, “Joker”) and Jack Quaid (31, “The Boys”) announced the shortlisting for the world’s most important film award on Tuesday (January 23rd). The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10, 2024.

“Oppenheimer” leads the field with 13 nominations. Of course, this includes the best film and the best director for Christopher Nolan (53). Three actors made it into the selection, as well as various technical categories, as expected. Only three films in history have received more nominations than “Oppenheimer.” “All About Eve,” “Titanic” and “La La Land” made 14th.

“Poor Things” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” follow “Oppenheimer” with 11 and 10 nominations, respectively. “Barbie”, on the other hand, fell somewhat short of its potential. Despite two nominated songs and a surprise in the supporting actress category, it was “only” enough for eight nominations. Director Greta Gerwig (40) and leading actress Margot Robbie (33) came away empty-handed.

Several films with German participation nominated

Of course, 2024 couldn’t keep up with the rain of nominations for “All That’s New in the West” last year. Nevertheless, there is good news from a German perspective. “The Teacher’s Room” made it into the final five in the “International Film” category. In it, the school drama competes against Wim Wenders (78). The Düsseldorfer is in the running for Japan with “Perfect Days”.

Sandra Hülser (45) actually did it. The Thuringian is there as best actress for “Anatomy of a Case”. They also had some observers on the list for their supporting role in “Zone of Interest”. But that would be too much of a good thing. Both works are up for best film.

No surprises for best film

Ten films are nominated in the main category of best film; this was already clear in advance. There were no real sensations. This is most likely to apply to the satire “American Fiction,” which was viewed surprisingly often. Here are all the nominations at a glance:

“American Fiction”
“Anatomy of a Case”
“Barbie”
“The Holdovers”
“Killers of the Flower Moon”
“Maestro”
“Oppenheimer”
“Past Lives”
“Poor Things”
“Zone of Interest”

However, there was a surprise in the direction. Here Justine Triet (45) was the only woman to make it into the final selection for “Anatomy of a Case”. Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Martin Scorsese (81, “Killers of the Flower Moon”), Yorgos Lanthimos (50, “Poor Things”) and Jonathan Glazer (58, “The Zone of Interest”) complete the picture.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie come away empty-handed

There is a medium-sized surprise in the best actor category. Leonardo DiCaprio (49) comes away empty-handed; his performance in (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) was also controversial in expert circles. These five gentlemen are there instead.

Bradley Cooper (“Mastro”)
Colman Domingo (“Rustin”)
Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”)
Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”)
Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”)

Margot “Barbie” Robbie looks down on the main actresses. Few people considered Annette Bening (65) for her role as long-distance swimmer “Nyad”.

Annette Bening (“Nyad”)
Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”)
Sandra Hülser (“Anatomy of a Case”)
Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”)
Emma Stone (“Poor Things”)

Surprise in the best supporting actresses. Very few people expected that America Ferrera (39) would make it into the final five for her role in “Barbie” as a frustrated mother whose mood has an impact on Barbieland.

Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”)
Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”)
America Ferrera (“Barbie”)
Jodie Foster (“Nyad”)
Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”)

Big names in the supporting cast. Robert De Niro (80) gets his eighth Oscar nomination for his villainous role in “Killers of the Flower Moon”. Ryan Gosling (43) also made it onto the list for his Ken in “Barbie”.

Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”)
Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”)
Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”)
Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”)
Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”)
