Steven Soderbergh will co-produce the 93rd Academy Awards with TV producer Jesse Collins and film producer Stacey Sher.

20 years after his Oscar triumph for the film "Traffic – Power of the Cartel", director Steven Soderbergh (57) is returning to the Academy Awards. Together with TV producer Jesse Collins (59, "Zoboomafoo") and film producer Stacey Sher (58, "Erin Brockovich") he will produce the Oscars in the new year. Due to the corona pandemic, the 93rd edition has been postponed from February to April 25, 2021.

This "dream team" will react to the current situation, explain Academy President David Rubin and Managing Director Dawn Hudson with a view to the corona pandemic. New concepts and approaches are now required. The trio themselves are enthusiastic, but also approach the task with respect: "We hope that we can create a show that really feels like the films we all love."

Realizing the Oscar ceremony virtually via zoom, as has recently been the case with other events, was only recently rejected by the Academy. Because the film and cinema industry has been at a standstill in the past few months, films that only started after December 31, 2020 may be submitted for the upcoming awards. The new deadline is now February 28, 2021. This year, works that premiered not in the cinema but on a streaming service, such as Disney's "Mulan", are also taken into account. The nominations for the most important film awards in the world are to be announced on March 15th.
