  • 10 films have the chance to win the coveted Oscar for best picture in 2023.
  • Before the winners are chosen on March 12, 2023, you should catch up on the nominated films.
  • Almost all titles can even be viewed in stream now.

Long gone are the days when only five films were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars each year. There are now up to 10 films in the running for the coveted trophy, and once the nominations are announced, film fans rush to see all the films before the awards ceremony in early March.

That’s not so easy, especially in Germany. In this country, film distributors occasionally keep potential Oscar hopefuls until shortly before or even after the award ceremony in order to take the Oscar buzz with them at the box office. With bad luck, this means that you can no longer see some films in time.

Luckily there are opportunities to see 9 of the 10 nominated films in Germany right now. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s a bit more complicated, but either way it’s possible to have seen all the films before the Oscars!

1. Nothing new in the west

You will have no trouble streaming “Nothing New in the West” in Germany. The war film, which also has good chances as a German contribution in the “Best Foreign Language Film” category, is included in the streaming service’s offering as a Netflix production.

2. Avatar: The Way of Water

You can see “Avatar: The Way of Water” in Germany without any problems – but only in the cinema for the time being. The film will end up streaming on Disney+ at an unknown date, but its continued success makes it difficult to predict an exact date. It is possible that “Avatar 2” will appear on Disney + in early March, just before the Oscars.

3. The Banshees of Inisherin

“The Banshees of Inisherin” has been in German cinemas since the beginning of January, but you can already easily see the film in the stream. To do this, you need a VPN service that allows you to bypass country blocks and a Disney+ subscription. At Disney + in Canada, “The Banshees of Inisherin” is already available in the stream – even with a German soundtrack!

4.Elvis

You can currently see “Elvis” in the stream on Wow, and the turbulent biopic with Austin Butler can also be rented or bought on Amazon Prime Video and other providers.

5. Everything Everywhere All At Once

You can currently rent or buy “Everything Everywhere All At Once” digitally. From February 20, 2023, the multiversal adventure will also land in the Wow subscription.

6. The Fabelmans

“The Fabelmans” was initially supposed to start in Germany in February 2023, but then the film ended up in the Berlinale program, which is why the regular start was postponed to March 9th, the Thursday before the Oscars. If you don’t want to wait that long, you can already rent “The Fabelmans” from iTunes in the US. If you get by with the English soundtrack, our guide will tell you how to rent or buy films on iTunes US.

A little tip: Currently, “The Fabelmans” can only be bought, for which 19.99 US dollars are due. From February 14th you can also rent the film, which will probably only cost 5.99 US dollars.

7. Tar

“Tár” will start in cinemas in Germany on March 2, 2023. Again, you can simply use iTunes’ US offering, where you can rent the film for $5.99 or buy it for $19.99. Alternatively, you can watch the film on the US streaming service Peacock from January 27, 2023, but you need a subscription and a VPN service.

8. Top Gun: Maverick

“Top Gun: Maverick”, the film hit of the cinema summer 2022, is available to stream on Paramount+. Of course you can also rent and buy the film.

9. Triangle of Sadness

“Triangle of Sadness” is still showing in some theaters. At Amazon Prime Video you can buy the film from March 10, 2023 in the stream for 13.99 euros. Just in time for Oscar weekend! If you don’t want to wait that long, iTunes’ US offering is your friend here, too.

10. The pronunciation

When it comes to streaming, “The Pronunciation” is the problem child of this year’s Oscars. Although the film will start in German cinemas on February 9, 2023 and could easily be seen there before the Oscars, there is still no date for a stream release, not even in the USA. That could change in February though, we’ll keep you updated here!

By the way, the slavery drama “Emancipation” with Will Smith went completely empty in the Oscar nominations. Although Will Smith was theoretically still in the running after the notorious slap in the face, his damaged reputation still stood in the way of a nomination. It remains exciting to see whether another Oscars scandal awaits us in 2023.
