Oscars 2023: which of these 5 films will represent France?

And the 5 films shortlisted for France at the 2023 Oscars are… Find out which film could succeed Titanium by Julia Ducournau, candidate for France in 2022.

The pre-selection of films in the running to represent France at the Oscars has just been unveiled.

The commission (see composition below) chose 5 films:

  • A Plein temps, by Éric Gravel (released March 16, 2022, available on DVD / VOD)
  • Les Pires, by Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret (released November 30)
  • Revoir Paris, by Alice Winocour (currently showing, video above)
  • Saint-Omer, by Alice Diop (released November 23)
  • One Beautiful Morning, by Mia Hansen-Love (released October 5)

The name of the finalist will be announced on September 23, 2022.

Several of these films have already been noticed at festivals in recent months: Saint Omer has just won two prizes at the Venice Film Festival. Full time had won an interpretation award for Laure Calamy, also at the Venice Film Festival, in 2021. Finally, Les Pires was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival (Un Certain Regard section) and at the Angoulême Francophone Film Festival. Note the strong representation of female directors in this selection: out of 5 films, 4 of them are directed by women.

20 directors who are moving French cinema

Since the reform announced this summer, the commission is made up of seven professionals appointed each year by the Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul Malak, on the proposal of the President of the CNC, Dominique Boutonnatrecalls the CNC in its press release. In 2022, these are exporters Grégoire Melin and Hengameh Panahi, producers Didar Domehri and Philippe Rousselet, directors Jacques Audiard and Michel Gondry, and, as a qualified personality, Ariane Toscan du Plantier. The commission meets in the presence of the president of the CNC and the president of Unifrance, both endowed with the quality of observers without deliberative voice.

Changes in the composition of the commission and in the selection process

In addition, the CNC specifies that the selection process has evolved this year: feature films wishing to represent France at the Oscars had to submit their application before September 1. This year, 33 films applied.

For the record, only feature films released between January 1 and November 30, 2022, in a majority language other than English (but not necessarily French), whose artistic team is majority French, are eligible.

The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12, 2023 in Los Angeles.
