High mass of American cinema, the 96th Oscars ceremony took place this Sunday, March 10 in the night. A highly anticipated event but which resulted in an evening without much surprise, culminating in the triumph of Oppenheimer, winner of seven statuettes. We take stock.
Oppenheimer take away the night
It was the favorite of the evening. Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Score .
The other big winner of the evening is Poor Creatures by Yorgos Lanthimos. Emma Stone doubles as Lily Gladstone (Killers of the flower moon) by winning his second Oscar, seven years after that of La La Land. The film also won the major artistic prizes (sets, costumes, makeup, hairstyle) under the nose and beard of barbie. The (pink) box of 2023 only leaves with the Oscar for best song, awarded to Billie Eilish and Finneas.
Anatomy of a fall to his statuette
Last night was also the end of a great adventure for Anatomy of a fall. Justine Triet’s film, Palme d’Or last May and winner of all the major awards since, won one of the four prizes for which it was nominated, the Oscar for best original screenplay.
This is the first statuette in this category to go to a French production since 1966 and the film A man and a woman by Claude Lelouch, who also won the Palme d’Or.
Anatomy of a fall wins in particular against the Netflix film Maestro by Bradley Cooper, cited seven times but left empty-handed.
Hayao Miyazaki, Wes Anderson and Godzilla crowned
Among the events of these 2024 Oscars, we will also note the prize for best animated film awarded to the film The Boy and the Heron by Hayao Miyazaki. The legendary Japanese director wins it a second time, 21 years later Spirited away. The two films are also the only traditional 2D animation productions to have won the Oscar in this category, dominated by 3D.
It was also a great evening for Japan since the modest Japanese film Godzilla Minus One ($15 million budget) won the statuette for best visual effects compared to blockbusters Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Mission Impossible 7, Napoleon And The Creator.
Finally, Wes Anderson is an Oscar-winning director! The filmmaker, a fan of symmetry and pastel colors, won the Oscar for best short film for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugarreleased in September on the Netflix streaming platform.
