OSS 117: Red alert in black Africa sees Nicolas Bedos endorse the realization of the third adventure of Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath, still played by Jean Dujardin. In this new opus, OSS 117 is forced to team up with an agent younger than him, OSS 1001, played by Pierre Niney.

When writing this trip to Africa for OSS 117, we find Jean-François Halin, who had already co-signed the two previous films, Cairo’s nest of spies and Rio no longer responds. At the microphone of BFM TVhe confided that certain parts of his screenplay were changed by Nicolas Bedos, and a scene that was close to his heart was cut, a scene about… giraffes:

“OSS 1001 told OSS 117 why they had long necks. He explained that they had eaten all the leaves that were at the bottom of the tree and therefore only those that were at the top remained. Only those that had long necks had survived.”

He pursues :

And 117 said that if the long-necked giraffes had eaten all the leaves at the top, there must be leaves at the bottom and therefore short-necked giraffes. He then went in search of short-necked giraffes throughout the film. It was a scene that I loved. It was plain OSS.

Nicolas Bedos made the choice to cut it as well as to review the chronology of the film in order to reduce its density and improve its fluidity. The red thread of the short-necked giraffes therefore disappeared and the plot remained focused on the rebellion against President Bamba and the complicated relationship between 117 and 1001.

“[Nicolas Bedos] made Zepheryne appear [l’épouse du président] much earlier than I had indicated”recalls Halin. “The president’s look-alikes to protect him from assassinations, that’s him. It’s a great idea. We reworked some scenes together, he cut others, which I regret – but that’s the scriptwriter’s lot “.

Scenes cut or not, OSS 117: Red Alert in Black Africa still brought together 1.62 million moviegoers in theaters in the unfavorable context of the pandemic. This evening is its first broadcast on the small screen, reserved for Canal+ subscribers.
