Putin demands gas payments in rubles from tomorrow

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he has signed a decree requiring foreign buyers of Russian gas to pay in rubles from Friday. Contracts would be stopped if these payments were not made, says Putin.

Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin has ordered, effective April 1, that Western countries must open accounts with Gazprombank in order to continue receiving Russian gas. Otherwise, deliveries to the “unfriendly” countries would be stopped, Putin said on Russian state television. It was initially unclear whether the states themselves would have to pay in rubles or whether a euro payment would be converted directly.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at a press conference with his Austrian counterpart Karl Nehammer: “The contracts state that payments will be made in euros.” Yesterday, Wednesday, the SPD politician telephoned the Russian President and initiator of the aggressive war in Ukraine. Scholz “made it clear to Putin that it will stay that way”. According to him, Gazprom’s contractual partners on the German side can continue to pay in euros.

More on that shortly.
