Our advice for switching to an electric car

MORNING LIST

The automotive revolution has started. In less than two years, sales of electric cars – be they hybrids, plug-in hybrids or 100% electric – have taken off. Over the first three quarters of the year, they represent a third of the registrations of passenger cars in France (8% only for vehicles using exclusively an electric motor). Despite the rise in prices it generates, this electrification of the automobile will continue to gain ground.

The phenomenon is based on several levers: the prospect of seeing the cost of batteries drop, the arrival of generalist brands but also the appearance of small, more accessible urban models. The strong regulatory pressure exerted by the public authorities through European standards but also the programmed exclusion from urban space of the most polluting models will also have spillover effects. The generalization of low-emission zones to agglomerations of more than 150,000 inhabitants has also just been enshrined in law. We offer you our selection, according to your financial means and your uses, among the many models available on the market.

  • What to know before buying

Here are some tips before you start buying an electric car.

The purchase of a new 100% electric car is accompanied by a maximum ecological bonus of 6,000 euros (within the limit of 27% of the purchase price) for models whose price does not exceed 45,000 euros. Beyond that (and up to a price of 60,000 euros), this advantage is capped at 2,000 euros. The acquisition of a plug-in hybrid (gives the right to a premium of 1,000 euros provided that its price does not exceed 50,000 euros). Recently extended, this mechanism will see all its amounts reduced by 1,000 euros from 1er July 2022.

With the energy mobilized for the manufacture of batteries, an electric or hybrid vehicle suffers a handicap in terms of carbon footprint. In use, this differential will be absorbed more or less quickly depending on the origin of the electricity used. According to the NGO Transport & Environment, CO emissions2 of an electric car over its lifetime represent 90 g / km, against 233 g / km for a diesel and 253 g / km for a gasoline. In France, the environmental balance of an electric would be better than a thermal from 12,000 km traveled, that is to say on average after one year. On the other hand, it will be necessary to drive at least 100,000 km in Poland, where coal-fired power stations dominate.
