“our most probable hypothesis”, the cause of death finally identified?

Around ten days after the discovery of the bodies of two French people, Laurent and Véronique Blond, on the Portuguese island of Madeira, a lead would be largely favored by investigators. We take stock.

After that of little Émile and that of young Erwan, another disappearance has shaken France for several weeks. It is that of Véronique and Laurent Blond, a French couple from Tarn-et-Garonne who have not given any sign of life since March 16. It was on the island of Madeira, Portugal, that he was last seen hiking on the trails of São Vicente, towards Porto Moniz, in Calhau, on Saturday March 16, in the afternoon.

On vacation with their daughter, Johanna, the latter did not follow them during this walk. It was she who reported their disappearance, not seeing her parents return. The Portuguese authorities mobilized significant search resources, both on land and at sea, for nearly 15 days. Without success. Finally, it was a walker who discovered one of the bodies, probably that of Véronique, on Thursday April 4. The next morning, investigators found a second body, about 150 meters lower, which could be that of her husband.

What is the most probable cause of the death of Laurent and Véronique?

After the discovery of the bodies, two judicial investigations were opened in France and Portugal to determine the causes of their deaths. As reported The DispatchIt is the accident which is today considered “the most probable hypothesis” in the eyes of investigators. But what could be the cause of the death of the two bakers?

According to Commissioner Joao Gois, who supervised the recovery of the bodies, several clues suggest that the two spouses did a fall of several meters as they walked on steep, slippery and muddy terrain. Starting with the presence, not far from the remains which were in an advanced state of decomposition, of a shoe and a backpack containing documents belonging to the couple.

Analyzes still in progress

If the accident theory is widely considered by investigators, it has not yet been confirmed. Particularly because the identity of the corpses has still not been officially verified. “Investigations are currently underway to formally identify these people, so it is impossible to say with certainty that it is the couple”indicated Bruno Sauvage, public prosecutor in Montauban, on the day of the discovery of the second body.

DNA analyzes are therefore still underway in Madeira. They should reveal the identity of the corpses but could also tell us more about the causes of their death. Furthermore, a search carried out in the house of Laurent and Véronique did not reveal any element likely to explain their disappearance. No sign, either, of a possible desire to commit suicide. This avenue had already been ruled out given the character of the two spouses. “They were very jovial, hardworking and friendly people”confirmed the mayor of their town, Jean-Luc Deprince.
