Out of court – tuna thief is now behind bars

The drug addict Oberlander was caught stealing again – and this time the judge showed no mercy.

The 33-year-old unemployed man has already made a “proud” nine entries in his criminal record. Most of his convictions were for robbery, the most recent being in the summer. But three days later, the drug addict committed his next crime. At the end of June, with 16 benzos (sedatives) under his belt, he walked into a gas station in Feldkirch and had five cans of tuna, three air fresheners and a water pistol hidden in his hoodie. When the employee stands in his way and asks if he doesn’t want to pay for the items, the thief gives him a push. The man falls and the perpetrator escapes. However, the joy of his successful escape only lasts for a short time. The thieves are caught by the police, their personal details are recorded, and the perpetrator is released. The Oberlander committed his next crime two days later as a hitchhiker. After a woman let him ride with him at night, he stole her wallet with around 450 euros including an ATM card. In the trial at the Feldkirch regional court, the 33-year-old only pleaded guilty to the charge of predatory theft. “I can’t remember exactly because I have a serious drug problem.” He was actually hungry and thirsty at the time and wanted to steal a bottle of vodka. The water pistol would have been intended as a gift for the friend’s son. The fish cans and air fresheners are no longer on his radar. Surveillance video proves the opposite, but that he didn’t want to hurt the employee. “I just pushed him to the side and he probably tripped over his own legs.” The surveillance camera video proves the opposite. The jury finds the man guilty. Judge Lisa Pfeifer did not legally sentence the incorrigible man to two years in prison. In addition, there is an old prison sentence of six months that was originally suspended
