Of course, on the child’s big day you also want to shine as the mother of the bride or groom. Here we show which outfit traps you should avoid and which cuts and colors can be used to create a fashionable masterpiece.
The wedding of one’s own daughter is also an exciting event for the mother of the bride. While there’s probably plenty of wedding dress inspiration out there, the second most important woman of the day is often forgotten. So here is a little style guide for the mother of the bride – but as the mother of the groom you can also use this inspiration.
Outfit ideas for the mother of the bride without stealing the show from her daughter
The bride should be the focus of the wedding in her outfit. This means you shouldn’t choose a dress that stands out more than the bride’s. White is therefore taboo. The same is true with red and black. The latter is usually reserved for funeral ceremonies and fortunately the daughter’s special day is not included. The safest way to drive is to explicitly follow the bride’s wishes or the specified dress code. If there isn’t one, here’s tip number 1:
1. Blue always works
You can’t go wrong with dresses in a variety of shades of blue. A dark blue appears classically timeless, a light baby blue is light and fresh. Shades of blue also suit all skin and hair colors. A look in blue is a safe choice.
2. Pretty in pastel
Wedding guest outfits in pastel tones offer an excellent color alternative to blue. Depending on your skin tone, you can choose a light lilac tone, sage green or even light yellow. Especially at spring and summer weddings, the mother of the bride can show off her fashion sense in a pastel-colored look.
3. Elegant with a feel-good factor
For the mother, the daughter’s wedding day can easily last from early in the morning until late at night, after all, she is a pastor, event planner and all-round helping hand all in one. Nothing is more uncomfortable than a dress that is too tight or ill-fitting. The feel-good factor should also be important when choosing an outfit. Dresses in a classic A-line are particularly suitable because they gradually widen under the bust, leaving enough room for one or two snacks at the buffet. You should also pay attention to the materials. Chiffon, for example, is a great figure-flatterer because it falls gently and nothing shows under the dress. When it comes to color, you can also pay attention to whether sweat stains appear.
4. Away from the classics
If monochrome blue or pastel is too boring for you, you can use floral patterns. As a mother of the bride, you can score points with a fresh look, especially in the spring and summer seasons. Lace is also allowed. If you want to move away from the classic cuts, you can use fluttering sleeves or flounces. This is how you create an elegant, dynamic look.

5. Who wears the pants
Of course, the mother of the bride doesn’t necessarily have to wear the dress. Costumes with a top, jacket and skirt or even chic trouser suits are also quite appropriate. If you stick to bright, muted colors and elegant cuts, you are guaranteed to cut a good figure in your wedding photos.
