Outlander fans and stars have paid tribute to Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor who passed away on July 26.
The music world has been in mourning for the announcement of the tragic death of singing legend Sinéad O’Connor at the age of 56. In a statement released Wednesday evening, the singer’s family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Sinéad. His family and friends are devastated and have asked that their privacy be respected at this very difficult time.“
The star recently lent her voice to the theme song of the historical-fantasy series Outlander. And this is the first time in seven seasons that the series has offered a new version. Here’s everything you need to know about this song.
What is Outlander’s credits?
Outlander’s credits are “The Skye Boat Song”, an adaptation of a Gaelic song composed by William Ross in 1782 and originally titled “Cuckoo of the Tree”. Its modern version became popular at the end of the 19th century, the lyrics having been modified to tell the journey of Bonnie Prince Charlie – nickname of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788), pretender of the Stuarts to the English and Scottish crowns – from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye after its defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The lyrics were written by Sir Harold Boulton.
How did Sinéad O’Connor come to interpret the Outlander song?
It was the bosses of Starz – the original channel of the Outlander series – who chose the singer to perform a new version of the song for season 7 of the series. At the time the song was revealed to the public last February, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts told insider : “We are honored to have Sinéad O’Connor performing ‘The Skye Boat Song’. His interpretation reminds me of everything that is beautiful in ‘Outlander’. She has an incredible talent. It’s a voice that spans the ages – a voice that pierces heart and soul – and embodies the spirit of the show.“.

Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser, said on instagram “I hope you are at peace…and with your little boy. Thank you for sharing your soul with us and for soothing us with your amazing voice, beautiful Sinéad.“
Outlander executive producer Maril Davis also paid tribute to the singer on her account. instagram : “On behalf of the entire Outlander team, we are deeply saddened by the news of Sinead’s passing. She was incredibly talented and working with her on this season’s credits song was a real honor. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.“
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts also shared his emotion: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sinead O’Connor. Her distinct voice and brave spirit not only transformed the music scene, but also had a profound impact on social issues. She will be remembered for her outstanding contribution to music and her remarkable courage. I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans around the world.
