Golf star Hovland sets new course record

Norway’s Viktor Hovland breaks the course record at Olympia Fields Country Club and qualifies for the Ryder Cup. Another three Europeans can qualify via the two ranking lists until September 3rd. Half of the US team is also set.
Norway’s golf star Viktor Hovland won the second tournament of the multi-million dollar FedExCup playoffs with an outstanding 61 final round, setting a course record at Olympic Fields Country Club. The 25-year-old from Oslo prevailed near Chicago with a total of 263 shots ahead of USA’s Scottie Scheffler and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick (both 265). Northern Ireland’s golf star Rory McIlroy (268) finished the $20 million event in fourth place. For his second success on the US tour, Hovland received prize money of 3.6 million US dollars (3.31 million euros).
With the victory, Hovland also qualified for the European Ryder Cup team, which will play against the best golfers in the USA in Rome at the end of September. Previously, the Spaniard Jon Rahm and McIlroy had secured a place in Team Europe. Another three Europeans can qualify via the two ranking lists until September 3rd. Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald will personally award the remaining six team places.
After the tournament in Olympia Fields, half of the US team has now been confirmed for the Ryder Cup. Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa and Xander Schauffele qualified for the continental comparison. US captain Zach Johnson will nominate the remaining six players after next Sunday’s Tour Championship in Atlanta. The season finale features the top 30 PGA pros. The winner of the playoff series will receive a bonus of US$18 million.
