Over 400 m hurdles – “Batteries were empty”: Giger’s World Cup adventure ends in the semi-finals

The 22-year-old from Eastern Switzerland clearly missed the desired season best in the semifinals over 400 m hurdles.

Yasmin Giger fell by the wayside in the semifinals of the World Championships in Eugene. That’s not a surprise. Even if the 22-year-old had reached her personal best (55.25 seconds) in the semifinals, it would not have been enough for a place in the final.

Giger finished her semifinals in 56.35. She was also quite a bit away from her best performance of the season (55.90), which she had set in the preliminary heat. In the heat with world record holder Sydney McLaughlin, Giger quickly lost touch on lane 2. As a result, she had to run her own race.

Betting debts are honor debts

“The batteries were empty, you could see that,” said the 2017 U20 European champion in the subsequent interview. “When the others start quickly and you’re behind, it becomes difficult,” says Giger. Nevertheless, the title fights were very inspiring for her. “It showed me that you can also believe in yourself.”

The day before, Giger had not really believed in himself or in a place in the semifinals. Accordingly, she made a bet with the SRF crew on site – and redeemed her debts in the interview.

Four Americans qualified for the final of the top eight. McLaughlin posted by far the best time of any semifinalist with 52.17. Only Femke Bol stayed under 53 seconds like the world record holder. The Dutchwoman ran 52.84 and will probably have a say in the fight for the medals. Her best time is 52.03.
